    St Francis is the patron saint of ecology, and most people think of him as outstanding in his love of the natural world. In fact, he stands in a long tradition going back to the Desert Fathers, of holy men and women who saw their friendly relations with other animals as recreating the peace of Eden and anticipating the peace of the future kingdom
